My Favorite Season for Family Photographs

What is the best season for your family photo shoot?

It's a fairly common question I receive.  Today I'm going to give you my answer.

Any guesses?  Ok... here it goes.

Fall is my favorite season to schedule family photographs!

It may not come as a surprise to many of you, but I'm going to explain why I love to photography outside in the Fall.

First of all in Texas, fall is defined as that short (almost non-existent season) which comes right after summer when we're all sweating outside after 5 minutes and before winter in which we are all bundled up because we can't stand the cold weather.  And by cold, I mean a high in the 40s or 50s.  It can be anywhere in the late October to late November early December time frame.

One of the reasons I love photographing outside in the fall is all the fun colors!  The leaves are changing colors to beautiful oranges, reds, and yellows.  And sometimes you get the gorgeous deep purple color.  It's a perfect backdrop!  When families where complimentary fall colors with the fall background, everyone looks cohesive and the photos stand out.

Another reason is the cooler climate.  Granted the weather changes on a dime at times, but having a cooler climate outside where the highs are in the 60s or 70s instead of 90s makes a big difference.  Parents and children are more comfortable being outside for longer periods of time.  no one is sweating profusely.  And the cooler climate energizes kids!  Kids are just happier which makes Mom and Dad stress less.  But it's not quite cold enough where everyone is in jackets, cold.

The last reason is the light!  I'm a lightseeker.  In non-photography terms, it means I love to seek out beautiful light for photographs.  I love backlight (when the light is behind the people I'm photographing).  It gives a beautiful warmth to family pictures and makes everyone glow a little.  In my opinion, October, November and December have gorgeous light before the sun sets.  It's one of my favorite times to have family photo sessions.  Golden hour is the hour right before the sun sets, and it is magical!!

Although a lot of families have their family photos taken during the fall for the holiday season, it's not the only reason photographers love the fall.  Everything about the season just makes up happy!  The colors, climate and light all come together, and we create beautiful family photos for you with it!

I'm already booking fall sessions.  If you want to book yours, please contact me at emilyingallsphotography@gmail.com or 512-853-0899.  Or send me a message through my website!
