What is the best age to photograph babies?

My best friend texted me yesterday asking me a simple question of what is the best age to photograph her daughter. First of all, her daughter is adorable, like every baby, so any age is a good age.

There are certain ages that work best for babies to be photographed, and those are milestones months.

Milestone months for babies are

  • Newborn

  • 3 months old

  • 6 months old

  • 9 months old

  • 1 year old

Each of these represents a different stage in their first year of life. Newborns are wonderfully cuddly and beautiful. It’s a special stage of new life and new beginnings. Best time to photograph newborns is within the first 10 days of birth.

3 month old babies are more alert with their eyes open, looking around, and starting to understand what is going on all around them. The baby’s personality are starting to show.

6 month old babies are usually sitting up and playing with toys actively. Babies will hold items (and probably throw them). And their personalities are definitely alive and well. This is a fun age to photograph!

9 month old babies are usually crawling and moving around. Babies are definitely interacting with Mom/Dad and other family members. They love to play!

1 year old babies are finally one! It’s their milestone birthday which definitely deserves a celebratory photo session! Some one year old babies are walking. Each has their own personality which really shines through. Smash cake sessions are fun to photograph because it really captures if the one year old is shy or adventurous.

So there you have it!

Now there is some give and take for each milestone month. If you wait a month, it’s no biggie! Photographing babies is a fun adventure for me, as your photographer, you, and your baby! We’ll have fun, play around, capture smiles, and their little personality!

If you’re interested in capturing your baby’s milestone photos or would like to schedule a 1 year old birthday session, please contact me or email me at emilyingallsphotography@gmail.com! I’d love to talk to you about what you’re looking for and how I can capture beautiful photos and memories for you and your family!

Smash Cake In-home Lifestyle Photo Session | Round Rock, TX

This little man turned 1 year old!

This little man had a blast making a huge mess at his first birthday party surrounded by his grandparents, parents, and aunts.  I was able to photograph him before the cake capturing his 1 year old milestone photos.  After his 1 year milestone photos, I shot a few family photos.  Then the cake came out!

Little man had no idea what to do with it after first.  His Grandma and Aunts helped him out after he tried to put out the birthday candle with his fingers.  The cake ended up everywhere, but he had a lot of fun making a huge mess.  And I had a blast photographing his birthday cake smash!

Cullen's Birthday

Cullen had a birthday!  I can't believe he's 5 years old (which he will tell you without hesitation).  He's growing up so fast!  Cullen is my sweet, mischievous one.  He seems to always be thinking of others (siblings included).  He loves to help me bake and cook.  And I'm even nice enough to share the batter with him now.

On all my kids' birthdays, I attempt (attempt being the key word!) to photograph a Day in the Life.  This way as they get older, they an always look back and see how they spent each birthday.  This year's day in the life for Cullen was a little hectic, but I did my best.  I didn't capture everything (aka Tae Kwon Do class), but I did manage to get all the important stuff.

Cullen told me exactly how old he was (with both hands) when he woke up at 6am!

I always put one candle in their breakfasts to start their birthday with a little something special.

Scootering around on the driveway.

More scooter.

Lunch time with his request of chicken nuggets (his favorite).
