My approach to Newborn Photography | Austin and Round Rock Newborn Photographer

Newborns are small bundles of joy! They are tiny, snuggly, and oh so cute!

But newborns can also be stressful for parents (especially first time parents). They require a lot of work with feedings, changings, and tend to have a crazy sleep schedule for awhile.

This is why I take a relaxed approach to shooting lifestyle newborn photography.

When newborns are laid on a bed or in their crib, they tend to do their own thing. They may stretch out with their toes pointed straight up or they might curl up on themselves, falling fast asleep.

Whichever way they decide to pose themselves, I shoot it.

Whether they are sleeping they whole session or wide awake, I capture the moment.

No two newborns are alike. They each have their own personality making each unique.I believe my job is to capture the uniqueness of each newborn I photograph. They are all unique and special in their own way.

I will swaddle them. I’ll let them have their pacifers. I soothe them if they start getting upset, but I capture it all.

All their interactions with Mom and Dad.
The sweet kisses and snuggly moments.
The awestruck older brother and sister.
The tiny smiles.
The frowny faces.

I capture the moments Mom and Dad can look back on and say, “You were so little and special!”

I capture them in that special, short newborn time period that will be over before you know it.

Because that is what newborn photography is all about for me.

What is the best age to photograph babies?

My best friend texted me yesterday asking me a simple question of what is the best age to photograph her daughter. First of all, her daughter is adorable, like every baby, so any age is a good age.

But…

There are certain ages that work best for babies to be photographed, and those are milestones months.

Milestone months for babies are

  • Newborn

  • 3 months old

  • 6 months old

  • 9 months old

  • 1 year old

Each of these represents a different stage in their first year of life. Newborns are wonderfully cuddly and beautiful. It’s a special stage of new life and new beginnings. Best time to photograph newborns is within the first 10 days of birth.

3 month old babies are more alert with their eyes open, looking around, and starting to understand what is going on all around them. The baby’s personality are starting to show.

6 month old babies are usually sitting up and playing with toys actively. Babies will hold items (and probably throw them). And their personalities are definitely alive and well. This is a fun age to photograph!

9 month old babies are usually crawling and moving around. Babies are definitely interacting with Mom/Dad and other family members. They love to play!

1 year old babies are finally one! It’s their milestone birthday which definitely deserves a celebratory photo session! Some one year old babies are walking. Each has their own personality which really shines through. Smash cake sessions are fun to photograph because it really captures if the one year old is shy or adventurous.

So there you have it!

Now there is some give and take for each milestone month. If you wait a month, it’s no biggie! Photographing babies is a fun adventure for me, as your photographer, you, and your baby! We’ll have fun, play around, capture smiles, and their little personality!

If you’re interested in capturing your baby’s milestone photos or would like to schedule a 1 year old birthday session, please contact me or email me at emilyingallsphotography@gmail.com! I’d love to talk to you about what you’re looking for and how I can capture beautiful photos and memories for you and your family!
